Biography

Professor Samaila Usman Dakyes is a Nigerian academic, Professor of Forensic Graphics, and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Partnerships) at the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia). Born on January 1, 1964, in Mangu, Plateau State, he previously served as the Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Design at FULafia and had an extensive academic career at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria.

His pioneering research sits at the intersection of graphic design, industrial design, and document security, focusing on innovative Research & Development (R&D) solutions to combat document theft, forgery, and counterfeiting. A major breakthrough in his work is the development of anti-copy and thermochromic security inks formulated from indigenous, sustainable Nigerian materials, such as Euphorbia and Calotropis procera latexes, honey, and paraffin wax.

Professor Dakyes' technical contributions utilize covert "blind image" printing, thermal-color-shifting mechanisms, Moiré interference patterns, and Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) to ensure security marks bond deeply with paper fibers. These innovations prevent commercial digital scanners from reproducing official documents and allow instant visual verification without specialized equipment. In recognition of his foundational work, he delivered ABU's May 2021 Inaugural Lecture, titled "Forensic Graphics: An R & D Approach To Curbing Document Theft In Nigeria," advocating for advanced, locally developed graphic technologies in national security printing.
